Dodged a bullet with Paul Ryan.

The nice thing about the Republican Party is that they are so predictable.

[Thankfully they did not choose Rob Portman; then we would be in trouble!]

But of course, Paul Ryan embodies everything that stinks about the Republican Party all rolled up into one guy - they are just slobbering all over him.  And from Wisconsin - no less!!! It's too good to be true! [Recall the “Occupy” movement started in Madison WI to overthrow their “deeply corrupt”…. Republican Governor Scott Walker!!!]*

This snot-nosed ankle-biter (Ryan) is as arrogant as George W, as elitist as Mitch McConnell, and as greedy as the rest of them.  Their slogan should be The Status Quo Works for Us!

Imagine a world where Republicans are back in power…

Here's their To Do list:

1. Repeal Health Care Reform
2. Dismantle Social Security
3. Undo Medicare and Medicaid (those folks just want handouts)!
4. More budget cuts; Less Government!!!! (except the stuff we like... Defense; we can increase that one).
5. Increase taxes – for the Middle Class! Don’t worry; not for anyone making more than $250k!
6. Women have gotten awful uppity lately; get back in the kitchen and bake a pie. Let's put all black men in prison (oh; they already are); any illegal aliens who snuck in; deport them or just shoot them (it’s cheaper); gays, don’t even think about it!
7. Electronic fence with razor wire across the Southern border; and More Guns!!!! It’s our Constitutional Right!!!
8. Student Loans? Don’t worry yourself with an education; you can’t afford it and we will manage things for you. After all, we are rich because we’re smart and you are poor because you’re stupid (and lazy).
9. Don’t forget Capital Punishment; that’s a good one. We’ll be the judge, after all, we’ve got God on our side!
10. The right to vote? Don’t busy yourself with such hifalutin ideas; we will handle the voting; after all you’re too dumb to have a valid ID to vote.

Popsicles Really Satsify

What is it about a popsicle in the Summer? My girlfriend moved to Baltimore and then her dog died. I drove 9 hours to see her (you understand). We decided to take a day trip to DC to see the usual suspects… the White House, the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, you know the drill. It was 1000 degrees that day so we melted as we slugged through the Mall wondering where the water was. It’s drained and completely dry due to being part of the Recovery Act – you know, infrastructure. So my friend procured 2 Blast Off popsicles from a vendor and we sat on the grass to take our shoes off. As we ate these popsicles I said, “This is the best popsicle I’ve Ever Had in my Entire Life.” She looked at me and said slowly, “It’s so…. Cold.” This struck us both as funny.

Is that your final Offer?

One of the most critical points during the Interview Process is the Offer Phase.

In Today's Buyer's Market, Clients can afford to be choosy but even top Companies must be on their best behavior during the Interview Process in order to land targeted Talent.

Remember the same Market has Candidates terrified, often paralyzed to make a move, wondering if the Company pursuing them will put them first on the chopping block if things go South. Uprooting families, logistics of duel-income couples, and pulling settled kids out of school are weighty issues to confront.

Think of the Interview Process as Courting the New-Hire-to-be. [They will most likely share their experiences with colleagues and then 'word on the street' is set in motion. Don't underestimate the power of your Company's reputation to attract top talent.]

Here's what matters to prospective Candidates during the Interview Process:

* Professionalism.
* Well-run; well-organized: Efficient and effective; a sign of things to come when employed.
* Smart/savvy: Knowlege of their business, where they are currently (best to be blunt up-front so they know what they're getting into and feel like they have a choice); and where they are headed; a Company with a great Vision can be an exciting opportunity for a Candidate wanting to make an impact.
* Value their employees: Reflected in the handling of the In-Person Interview including scheduling, travel logistics (direct flights, hotel, etc.)

But the Single Most important move you will make during the Interview Process is the Final Offer.

Of course it's not just about the money; benefits, bonus, commission, and stock options matter too but the Base Salary is what the Candidate will consider The Offer and will be the impetus for their decision to accept or decline.

The Offer (base salary) is not only a reflection of the Candidate's self-worth, but it is also a direct reflection of what they are worth to you. It's what says, "We Want You! We are excited about you and want you to represent our Company."

A good recruiter will set Salary expectations up-front and throughout the process with both Candidate and Client in an effort to increase the odds of a win-win outcome. This builds trust between the Candidate and the Client. When the Client comes through with the Offer that was discussed, in fact now expected, the Candidate will feel Confident accepting that Offer. It is what we agreed-to the entire time. No surprises.

Some Companies expecting Salary Negotiation Open with a Lower Than Expected Offer in an effort to get to their "Sweet Spot". Please don't!!! This could be the kiss of death for the Company at this late stage of the game. It may feel like betrayal to the Candidate who at this point in the process has gone through telephone and in-person interviews, taken psychological tests, filled out extensive Employment Applications, risked a current job by taking time off to interview, prepared for the interview, and may have bought new clothes for the interview. They feel like they've held up their end of the bargain, now it's the Company's turn to come through. They may be thinking, "How can I face my colleagues, my spouse, my kids and say, well, it's a lateral move but I just can't wait to get started." It may even turn into a matter of Pride where a Candidate feels like they must decline a weak Offer in order to save face.

My recommendation to Companies is to extend their Very Best Offer as their First and Final Offer. This again, seals trust with the Candidate who interprets this as, "they are not playing games with me and I will return the favor." On my end, I will let Candidates know, "If they put their very best foot forward, I want to assure them that you will not entertain a counter offer (or with all things remaining equal you're a Yes at $X Salary). Most Candidates are relieved, excited, and now are free to discuss the Offer and logistics with their loved ones, most often resulting in a win-win situation for all involved.

I realize this is easier said than done (believe me!) and if you have specific questions, please contact me @ 513.651.3111. I'm happy to help.

Canoeing is like life.

So my friends invite me canoeing. "C'mon!" They say, "It's fun!!! You'll Love it!!!"

Open to new experiences, I excitedly accept. "Of Course!!!" Thinking to myself, how hard could it possibly be?

[Not knowing this was a 13 mile trip down the river I quickly realized I was sorely unprepared.]
My canoeing partner and I attacked our task with a vengeance - Man vs. Nature - paddling like crazy, running into rocks, islands, tree stumps, at times sideways, at times backwards each convinced it was the others' fault. If only you could steer, if only you could paddle, and so on. Now about this time our canoeing buddies float by, Zen as the river itself without a care in the world, no exertion, smiles on their fat little faces.

Oh. So that's how this is supposed to go. It was then that I realized how much canoeing is like life. The harder I try sometimes, the more I clench my fists and grit my teeth, the more I seem to flap around and flounder, not getting any closer to my goal for the effort. Alternately, when I sit back and let the river take me, offering small corrections here and there - it's so much more enjoyable. My type-A buddies will understand this; we were groomed to take charge, rewarded for assertive behavior. Effort gleans rewards; put some elbow grease into it; nose to the grindstone and all that. Well, maybe there's a time and place for all of it. There is a time to take the reigns and lead. And there's also a time to sit back and go with the flow. Just let the River of Life take you on it's journey, and try to enjoy the ride. (Some folks are better than this than others).

6.5 hours later we skidded into the finish line with a relieved thud. I resisted the instinct the kiss the ground upon arrival. We were dirty, sunburned and tired but ultimately pleased with ourselves for finishing the task with some dignity intact.

As other folks boarded the bus back to the lodge, we realized how much worse things could have gone. With dripping hair and squishing shoes, one unfortunate girl with mascara running down her cheeks clutched a lone flip-flop rescued from a tipped canoe. Others already hung-over begged for air conditioning and aspirin. The day's events suddenly seemed comical... almost enjoyable as we both shared a knowing glance and heaved sighs of relief. Please don't misunderstand and think I would ever submit myself to such persecution voluntarily and kindly curb any impulse to invite me boating, camping, hiking, bouldering, trekking, or any form of white water rafting please - ever.
Thanks anyway though.
Yours in nature,
Heather

Creative Genius

The early passing of Michael Jackson reminds me we are all Creative Beings.
What a gift we were given for such a short time.

It gives me pause and I wonder what it's all about. What are we doing here on Earth in human form. What does God expect of us, mere mortals?

Michael Jackson transcended race, gender, economic class. He was bigger than all mundane judgment. He stretched us, inspired us, and generously took us along for the ride. We got goose bumps, we got up and danced, we were mesmerized, and we knew we were in the presence of greatness.

I believe we are drawn to this crazy industry by a common thread of the need, the drive, the urge to create. An artist does it for the love of the work. You know it when you seep through a wrinkle in the time-space continuum; when we connect with our higher power, the Universe, whatever you call it... I call it Creation.

It's the complex melding of the terror of staring at a blank page. The ecstasy of being lost in the moment. The discomfort of barring your soul for all to see, to critique, to embrace or reject.

By stark comparison, I wonder what gift do I have to offer? Will I ever be good enough, create anything worth sharing? And then I think what if Michael Jackson discarded Thriller as goofy, Billy Jean - silly. Bad? Not good enough. What a crime if he thought his gifts weren't good enough to share with the world.

So Share brave souls!!!! Share your gifts with the world and together we will raise the level of consciousness on the planet.

Thank you for sharing your Gifts with us Michael and may you rest in peace great soul.
